A message from CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Dear CPS Students, Parents, Families, and Staff,
A member of our community recently passed away after he was shot by a Chicago police officer on Monday, March 29. His name was Adam Toledo, and he was a 13-year-old student at Gary Elementary School. As a community, we join his family and the Gary Elementary School community to grieve his death.
Adam was a member of our CPS family, and we have been shaken by the circumstances of his passing. Adam’s death, along with the ongoing trial of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd and the civil unrest in Minnesota after the officer-involved shooting of Daunte Wright, are raising many emotions for our students. These events are compounding what has already been a stressful and unprecedented time, and we remain committed to meeting our students where they are and helping them process these complex and very personal issues.
The district has developed a collection of professional and mental health resources to help our educators create a safe space where students can ask questions and express their feelings freely. In addition, this guidance will support staff in addressing the social and emotional needs of our children, and will help them ensure sensitive issues and differing points of view are handled with the appropriate thoughtfulness and care.
Situations like this impact all of us but especially our young people, and our schools are prepared to support our students through candid and open conversations. We thank our educators for their commitment to this work and will continue updating the resources as situations evolve.

Un miembro de nuestra comunidad falleció recientemente tras haber sido disparado por un agente de policía de Chicago el lunes 29 de marzo. Su nombre era Adam Toledo, un estudiante de 13 años de la Escuela Primaria de Gary. Como comunidad, nos unimos a su familia y escuela para llorar su fallecimiento.
Adam era un miembro de nuestra familia de CPS, y las circunstancias de su fallecimiento nos han estremecido. Su fallecimiento, junto con el juicio en curso de Derek Chauvin por el asesinato de George Floyd y los disturbios civiles en Minnesota tras el disparo a Daunte Wright por parte de un agente policial, están creando muchas emociones en nuestros estudiantes. Estos acontecimientos están agravando el tiempo estresante y sin precedentes que hemos vivido por el momento. Por lo tanto, seguimos comprometidos a atender las necesidades de nuestros estudiantes, y a ayudarles a procesar estas cuestiones complejas y muy personales.
El distrito ha elaborado una colección de recursos profesionales y de salud mental para ayudar a nuestros educadores crear un entorno seguro, en que los estudiantes puedan hacer preguntas y expresar sus sentimientos libremente. Además, este documento servirá de guía para el personal a la hora de abordar las necesidades sociales y emocionales de nuestros niños. También garantizará que las cuestiones delicadas y los diferentes puntos de vista se traten de manera considera y cautelosa.
Situaciones como ésta nos afectan a todos, pero especialmente a nuestros jóvenes, por lo que nuestras escuelas están preparadas para brindarles apoyo, mediante conversaciones francas y abiertas.
